Hello. I'm new to cycling. Just picked up my first road bike and had a quick question. Its an older model Giant; the RS900, had the crew down an chainwheel clean it up, and was curios..the guard behind the back gears(rear wheel) seems to be slowly chipping away(it is really old after-all). Is this a vital part of the bike? Does it need to be replaced?

Crimson,

Congrats on getting into cycling. The chainguard on the rear wheel is not important if the bike is tuned properly. The Guard prevents the chain from going into the wheel if the Rear Derailleur is misaligned or damaged.
You can have it removed or replaced at most bike shops.- Robb
